Ballina to Byron Bay Transfers

Ballina Byron Gateway (BNK) is Byron Bay’s local airport — 32 kilometres and about 35 minutes door to door — and a pre-booked BYRO transfer is the fastest way through it. How the service works

Which airlines fly into BNK

The route map is narrower than the Gold Coast’s or Brisbane’s, but it covers the flights most Byron Bay visitors actually need: Sydney and Melbourne services from the major domestic carriers, plus regional connections. Travelling from another capital, you’ll usually connect through Sydney — and BNK still tends to work out faster overall than bussing down from Brisbane once you count the transfer on the other end. The pickup: one terminal, kerbside

BNK has one terminal. Arrivals and departures share the same building, and the landside kerb is directly outside the arrivals door — not a 400-metre walk through a multi-storey car park, not a shuttle to a remote stand. You collect your bags, walk through the sliding doors, and your driver is at the kerb with a name sign.

For anyone who has just flown two-plus hours with surfboards, bikes or a week of luggage, that matters. We track the inbound flight, so if it lands ten minutes early, we’re already there.

The drive

Heading north out of Ballina, the run to Byron Bay is about 32 km — 25 to 35 minutes in normal conditions, dual carriageway most of the way. Two honest notes: Friday afternoons between about 3pm and 6pm the Pacific Highway north of Ballina can back up with school traffic and early weekend arrivals — budget 45 minutes; and the Byron town centre itself slows down in peak summer (December to February). Our drivers know the back approaches — Ewingsdale Road into town, or the Bangalow back road when the highway is moving badly — and that local knowledge is worth more than it sounds when you’re tired and just want to get to your accommodation.

Round trips are discounted against two one-ways. Child seats — capsules to boosters — are $10 a seat, fitted before pickup (the adult-belt option is free). Surfboard bags, golf bags and oversized luggage ride inside our vans without roof racks — just tell us what you’re bringing so the right vehicle arrives.

The honest trade-off: BNK has fewer flights, so the airfare isn’t always the lowest — but the time and money you save on the ground are real.

Byron Bay to Ballina Airport: the departure run

The reverse trip is half our Ballina work. We collect from anywhere in Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, Ewingsdale or the hinterland and time the run so you’re at BNK about 90 minutes before a domestic departure — enough for a Pacific Highway hold-up and a calm check-in, which is a better use of your last morning than a rushed car ride. Check-in at a small airport closes earlier than you’d expect, and some carriers are strict on the cut-off.

Flying out early? Pre-dawn pickups for the first Sydney flights of the day are routine — that early Pacific Highway run is usually the easiest drive of the day, and the fare is the same fixed $79 all-in in a sedan.

Groups and multi-vehicle pickups

BNK’s small size works in a group’s favour: one terminal means one meeting point — no “which terminal are you at?” confusion.
